Driver Dies in One-Car Hillsborough Crash

The man hit a tree and was thrown from his car, the Hillsborough sheriff says.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A man died this morning (Dec. 24) when he was thrown from his car after losing control of the vehicle, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Erick M. Almanza, 32, was driving a 2000 Lincoln Town car at a high rate of speed about 12:25 a.m. west on Symmes Road east of U.S. 14. Deputies said he was approaching a railroad crossing when he went into the eastbound lanes to pass several vehicles. When he crossed the railroad tracks, he lost control of the car, went off of the north shoulder, and struck a tree. Mr. Almanza was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the car.
