VALRICO – A Valrico man was charged with murder after a domestic violence incident that resulted in the death of a woman.
Michael J Altland, 66, was charged with one count of Second Degree Murder. He was arrested Monday (Nov. 16) and booked remotely into the Hillsborough County Jail because he was hospitalized for an unrelated issue.
Aboutt 9:02 p.m Nov. 3, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call concerning a domestic violence incident that occurred at a home in the 2000 block of Heritage Crest Drive in Valrico.
When deputies arrived, Altland came out of the home covered in what appeared to be blood. Deputies entered the home and found a woman who had severe head injuries. She was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital where she was listed in extremely critical condition. Altland was also taken to the hospital with minor lacerations to his hands.
On Sunday (Nov. 15), the woman died from her injuries.
After an investigation and multiple interviews with witnesses the night of the domestic violence incident, detectives charged Altland with second-degree murder.
“Too often domestic-related homicides are the tragic end to a cycle of abuse. No one should lose a loved one to senseless acts of domestic violence,” Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister said. “I am urging everyone to know the warning signs of domestic violence and seek help. There are a number of local resources, including the Spring of Tampa Bay. You can call their crisis hotline 24-hours a day at (813) 247-7233.”
