The Tampa Police Department is urging sports fans to beware of scammers peddling fake tickets for the multiple big-time sporting events coming to the city during the next 10 days.

TAMPA – Sporting events will be taking center stage in the Tampa Bay area for the next few days and police are saying sports fans should beware of ticket scams.

Tampa will host two huge college football games – the Outback Bowl on Monday (Jan 2) and the college football playoff on Jan. 9 – as well as the New Year’s Day game between the Bucs and the Panthers and three Lightning home games on New Year’s Eve, Tuesday (Jan. 3) and Thursday (Jan. 5). That flurry of sporting events and the expected high demand for tickets makes for a tempting environment for scammers to try to take advantage of unsuspecting fans, Tampa police said.

Police are encouraging sports fans to purchase tickets from authorized dealers only. Those who are buying tickets from private sellers are taking a risk, officers said. But, if you buy from a private seller, meet somewhere safe, like a police station or public place where there are surveillance cameras. If possible, take a photo of the ticket seller’s ID, or take a photo of the tag on their car, police advise.
