Tampa Man Accused of Murdering Mother and Her Unborn Child
The baby was delivered by hospital personnel and lived briefly before passing away, Tampa police say.
TAMPA – Police arrested a Tampa man and charged him in connection with the deaths of a pregnant woman and her unborn child, according to the Tampa Police Department.
The woman died at St. Joseph’s Hospital of injuries she suffered during a domestic dispute. Police said she was about six months pregnant. Hospital personnel delivered the baby, which lived briefly before dying.
Jay Leonard Rodriguez, 39, of Tampa, was charged with two counts of Second Degree Murder related to the deaths of the woman and baby. He was also charged with Violation of Probation – because of his active felony probation status for Armed Robbery / Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
Police said they were called to the 2200 block of E Emma Street about 3:25 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 17) for a domestic dispute. When officers arrived, they said the found a pregnant woman suffering from life-threatening injuries.
Officers said they identified Rodriguez as the person who physically attacked the woman in her residence, and caused the deaths of both victims. He was taken into custody at his home without incident.
The investigation is continuing.
