A Tampa rally March 24 will call for lawmakers to pass common sense gun safety regulations. The rally is in solidarity with a national march the same day.

TAMPA – Community members from throughout the Tampa Bay region will gather for a solidarity rally on March 24 as part of the March for Our Lives movement.

The local march is one of hundreds happening around the country planned by students and survivors of gun violence in communities big and small, in all 50 states. The national day of action will focus on calling for lawmakers to make students’ lives and safety a priority and to pass common-sense gun safety legislation.

“I am tired of living with the idea that our schools are vulnerable to this type of violence,” said Brooke Shapiro. Shapiro is a Plant High School senior and one of the primary organizers of March for Our Lives Tampa Bay. “I am looking forward to marching with my teen peers as a show of public support for a drastic change in gun laws.”

The other key organizer, Macie Lavender, also a Plant senior, said, “No matter how much elected officials want to dismiss our concerns, they need to realize we are going to be around a lot longer than they are and we will all be registered voters before they know it. We can envision a future without gun violence and it is befuddling why they can’t.”

March For Our Lives is created by, inspired by, and led by students across the country who have said they will no longer risk their lives waiting for someone else to take action to stop the epidemic of mass school shootings that has become all too familiar.

The Tampa Bay rally is 10 a.m. March 4 at Kiley Garden, the elevated portion of Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, 400 N Ashley Drive, Tampa.
