Relay for Life Season Kicks Off Friday
STORY UPDATE: The American Cancer Society Regional Executive Team has assessed the Tampa Bay community and made the decision to postpone today’s (March 13) Relay for Life of Shorecrest. As for other Relay For Life and ancillary events, the group is assessing each individually and may have further postponements.
The American Cancer Society will stage more than 30 relays around Tampa Bay during March, April and May.
ST. PETERSBURG – An opening ceremony Friday (March 13) will welcome a group of people united by the insidious nature of a disease but unbowed by its specter.
Survivors will embrace as they traverse around the track. Kids will fly around in capes, hoping their embrace of superheroes will inspire others to save the day. In the event’s most moving moment, participants will light up luminarias with a name and message for a family or friend.
In the end, a community will bond on the common ground cancer has created in their lives.
It’s all part of the Relay for Life. Relay for Life raises funds to help the American Cancer Society battle the life-threatening disease.
Tampa Bay’s Relay For Life season kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday at Shorecrest High School, 5101 First St. NE. By the end of May, the American Cancer Society will have staged more than 30 Relays in Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Hernando, Manatee and Sarasota counties, attracting more than 20,000 participants.
Relay For Life unites communities across the globe for the world’s largest cancer-fighting fundraising event, annually gathering more than 2.5 million people. The grass roots gathering celebrates those who have battled cancer, honors the memory of loved ones lost, and initiates action for lifesaving change. Since 1985, Relay For Life events have raised nearly $6.5 billion for the American Cancer Society.
Funds raised will help the American Cancer Society provide support for people facing the disease, including rides to treatment and lodging for patients near cancer treatment facilities. The funds also will educate the community on the importance of early detection and treatment and fund research, including efforts taking place at our own Moffitt Cancer Center.
