St. Pete to Honor Tuskegee Airman on Veterans Day

And here’s an overview of government closures in St. Petersburg and Pinellas County on the holiday.

ST. PETERSBURG — St. Petersburg is host to the second annual Veterans Day Celebration on Wednesday (Nov. 11) at 8 a.m. in Williams Park, corner of Fourth Street and First Avenue N, by presenting the “2015 Honored Veteran” Award to Willie Rogers, one of the famed Tuskegee Airmen. The event is free and open to the public.

Here’s an overview of holiday closures for the City of St. Petersburg and Pinellas County:

For St. Petersburg utility customers during the Veterans Day holiday week of Nov. 9-13, there are no changes for residential trash collection. Residential curbside recycling pickup days also remain the same.

City government facilities closed on Wednesday include City Hall and Municipal Services Center downtown, community libraries, The Greenhouse (formerly Business Assistance Center), Enoch Davis Center, Sunshine Center, Dwight H. Jones Neighborhood Center, Jamestown Apartments and Townhomes Office, Coliseum, and Sunken Gardens’ business offices.

St. Petersburg city facilities open for business on Wednesday include Boyd Hill Nature Preserve, three public golf courses, Sunken Gardens attraction, North Shore Aquatic Complex, Mahaffey Theater Box Office, Municipal Marina Ship’s Store, recreation centers, brush sites and the city’s beach concession stand on Treasure Island.

Sunken Gardens, 1825 Fourth St. N, offers free admission Wednesday for U.S. military veterans and active military members with ID.

For water or sewer emergency service, contact the Water Resources Department at (727) 893-7261. For police, fire, or medical emergencies, dial 9-1-1.

Pinellas County government offices also will be closed Wednesday.

The courts of the Sixth Judicial Circuit (Pinellas and Pasco) will not be in session except for first-appearance advisory hearings and emergency situations.

The Solid Waste Administration Building and HEC3 will be closed. The scale house/landfill will be open normal business hours, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

County parks and preserves and the Florida Botanical Gardens will be open. Boat ramps and beach access areas will also be open, though annual beach and boat ramp parking permits will not be available for sale, as the administrative offices of Parks and Conservation Resources will be closed.

Brooker Creek Environmental Education Center, Weedon Island Cultural and Natural History Center and Heritage Village will be closed.

The offices and adoption center at Pinellas County Animal Services will be closed.
