The city’s main library will be renovated and named after the former president.

ST. PETERSBURG – Mayor Rick Kriseman announced this morning (Feb. 19) that the city’s main library will be renovated and named after former President Barack Obama.

It will be known as the President Barack Obama Main Community Library.

“Cities across America and throughout the world have already begun to honor President Obama and his legacy via the naming of schools and streets. In Florida, at least five cities have already named streets or sections of highway after our 44th president,” Kriseman said during the announcement. “But, we felt the most appropriate thing to name after President Obama was a library, where books are read, ideas are exchanged, research is conducted, and where forums and lectures can take place.”

The library, 3745 Ninth Ave. N, will undergo about $6 million in renovations that will be paid for with the recently renewed Penny for Pinellas sales tax.
