St. Pete Adopts Brown Pelican as Official City Bird
The brown pelican is featured in the St. Petersburg city logo and on other official materials.
ST. PETERSBURG – The St. Petersburg City Council today (Jan. 9) unanimously adopted the brown pelican as the official city bird.
The brown pelican can be seen in the city logo as well as on other official city of St. Petersburg materials, from manhole covers to vehicles.
The success story of the brown pelican reflects the success story of the Sunshine City.
According to the National Audubon Society, “[t]he current abundance of this species in the United States represents a success story for conservationists, who succeeded in halting the use of DDT and other persistent pesticides here; as recently as the early 1970s, the brown pelican was seriously endangered.”
