There is much to celebrate in 2020, but also much work before us. I hope you will begin a new, promising year in the Sunshine City by participating in St. Pete 2050, our generational visioning process. Visit StPete2050.com, take the survey, and attend a future StPete2050 event.

For all our recent growth and success, I recognize that there is no shortage of catalyzing ideas for how to make our city even better. That’s the way it should be, for cities are laboratories and much of what makes St. Pete unique is that it is truly people-powered. So share your ideas with us, and let’s work together to make St. Petersburg even better.

While StPete2050 is about looking 30 years ahead, the exciting year ahead should also command our attention. I believe 2020 will be the Year of the Burg in Tampa Bay.

The new St. Pete Pier and Pier District will open this spring, with celebrations planned throughout the summer. From the playground to Doc Ford’s to the tilted lawn, from the Pier Marketplace to Teak and much more in between, there will be something for everyone at the new St. Pete Pier.

Residents and visitors will see continued progress throughout our city as we spark additional economic development, especially in areas like 22nd Street S and the Skyway Marina District. Just a few weeks ago, we announced our Deuces Rising vision at the Historic Manhattan Casino, and in fact already have a request for proposals out to redevelop the Tangerine Plaza site. More is coming in the early weeks of 2020. You can learn more about Deuces Rising at stpete.org/deucesrising

We will continue to nurture all that makes St. Pete shine, including the arts, our entrepreneurial spirit, and our natural environment. And we will double down on preparing our city for a future of extreme weather and rising tides, doing our small part to mitigate a changing climate while implementing adaptation measures.

Join me in celebrating everything that makes St. Pete Florida’s best city. Let’s do it together and take another collective step toward attaining our vision of being a “city of opportunity where the sun shines on all who come to live, work, and play.”
