One deputy and the driver of a third car were sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Pinellas County sheriff.

MADEIRA BEACH – The Pinellas sheriff’s major accident investigation team is investigating a three-car crash that involved two on-duty deputies.

The crash happened about 2:06 this morning (May 30) on Gulf Boulevard near the intersection of Madeira Way in Madeira Beach.

Investigators said Deputy Michael Weiner, who had pulled over an unrelated vehicle, was stopped in the southbound curb lanes of Gulf Boulevard near the intersection of Madeira Way with his emergency lights on. Deputy Dean Welshans arrived on scene to provide backup and stopped his marked cruiser directly behind Weiner’s marked cruiser with his emergency lights on. Welshans was standing on the sidewalk near the passenger side of Weiner’s cruiser.

A 2002 Lincoln being driven by 26-year-old Nicholas Vancuren crashed into the back of Welshan’s cruiser, investigators said, and caused a chain reaction, pushing Welshans’ cruiser into the rear-end of Weiner’s cruiser.Investigators believe impairment was a factor in the crash.

Weiner and Vancuren were both taken to local hospitals for non-life threatening injuries. Welshans was not injured.
