North Carolina Man Charged in Oldsmar Carjacking
Pinellas deputies say he carjacked one person, later demanded keys from customers at a restaurant and tried another carjacking before being taken into custody.
OLDSMAR – Deputies arrested a North Carolina man after he carjacked a woman’s SUV, threatened the manager of a nearby restaurant and tried to carjack another vehicle, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
Troy Andre Johnson, 36, of Hickory, NC, was charged with one count each of Carjacking (unarmed), False Imprisonment, Attempted Carjacking, and Resisting Arrest Without Violence. A photo was not available because he was in Mease Countryside Hospital where he was taken after his arrest. He was found to be under the influence of narcotics, deputies said.
About 1:35 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 12), Kelly Mascavage was at the Oldsmar Circle K/Shell station, 3170 Tampa Road in Oldsmar, standing outside the passenger’s side of her Mazda 5 SUV pumping gas.
While she was pumping the gas, Johnson drove a mini-van into the gas station and parked next to the driver’s side of Mascavage’s SUV. Johnson got out of the mini-can and into the driver’s side of Mascavage’s SUV.
When he saw that keys were not in the ignition, Johnson demanded the keys and threatened Mascavage. Mascavage refused and retreated inside the business to call 911.
Deputies said Johnson fled the gas station on foot and entered the Panera Bread restaurant next door at 3180 Tampa Road.
Johnson began pacing back and forth, yelling at the manager and the seven customers inside the restaurant that he was not leaving until someone gave him keys to a car. Deputies said Johnson threatened the manager and eventually walked out of the business.
When deputies arrived, Johnson was in the Panera Bread parking lot trying to carjack a Ford Fusion.
Johnson ran around the vehicle to avoid deputies and tried to open the vehicle’s door before fleeing eastbound on foot.
Deputies chased him and used an electronic control weapon to stop him.
Johnson was secured by deputies and provided medical attention by Oldsmar Fire Rescue. Johnson was found to be under the influence of narcotics and taken to Mease Countryside.
