Pinellas deputies say he had fled from them but they were not pursuing him at the time of the crash.

PINELLAS PARK – Deputies are investigating a three-vehicle crash that closed one of the county’s busiest streets for several hours this morning (Sept. 14).

Two people were injured in the crash.

Liljana Elmazaj, 47, of Clearwater, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. Also taken to a hospital with minor injuries was Akeem Edwards, 33, of Clearwater. Edwards is facing criminal charges when he is released from the hospital, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said. The third driver was not injured.

The crash happened about 3:51 a.m.on 66th Street N at 72nd Avenue N in Pinellas Park.

Edwards was driving his silver Ford Mustang recklessly in the area of 34th Street N and 54th Avenue N early this morning. Deputies said they tried to stop Edwards, however, he fled and was not pursued.

Deputies said Edwards continued to drive recklessly on southbound 66th Street until he reached the intersection near Park Boulevard and 66th Street N. Edwards went through the intersection and struck the rear of a black Honda CRV and a Maroon Toyota Sequoia traveling in the same direction.

Investigators said the Toyota stopped in a parking lot. The Honda lost control, slid across the southbound lanes and tipped onto the driver’s side. Edwards also lost control, crashed in the southbound lanes and fled on foot.

Edwards was caught a short time later by a K-9.

Speed does appear to be a factor but impairment does not.

The investigation continues.

Roads remain closed at this time but should reopen shortly.

This report will be updated as information becomes available.
