Bike/Walk Tampa Bay will host Traffic Skills 101courses in both Tampa and St. Petersburg. They will give cyclists more experience to ride safely and legally in traffic.

TAMPA BAY – Bike/Walk Tampa Bay will host Traffic Skills 101 courses in both Tampa and St. Petersburg in early December.

The course is taught by League Cycling Instructor and is also a prerequisite for becoming an LCI, but is just as important for bicyclists who have experience riding on the roadways and want to improve their skills.

“People who ride in the road should take the course to learn these basic but very important bicycling skills,” said Julie Bond, senior research associate at the Center for Urban Transportation Research at the University of South Florida and BWTB program director.

TS101 gives cyclists more experience needed to ride safely and legally in traffic. Through TS101, students learn how to conduct bicycle safety checks, fix a flat, on-bike skills and crash avoidance techniques. The curriculum is fast-paced, includes an on-line course and then seven hours of in-person training (road riding and parking lot skills) and prepares cyclists for a full understanding of vehicular cycling. TS101 is a League of American Bicyclists course.

The upcoming TS101 classes take place on Dec. 2, in St. Petersburg (location TBA), and Dec. 9 in Tampa at CUTR, located on USF’s Tampa campus. At the end of the class, bicyclists are required to complete a seven-mile road ride to demonstrate their skills. This hands-on part of the experience gives bicyclists the confidence necessary to ride in traffic. They learn how to position themselves in the roadway and remain visible to drivers.

“When you know you’re riding in the road correctly it helps you feel calm, clear-headed, and safe,” said Bond, who is also an LCI.

The League Cycling Instructor (LCI) seminar is an intensive thre-day course that certifies participants as instructors to teach the League’s Traffic Skills 101 and other courses.
