The St. Petersburg Police Department has called in 200 traffic control officers to help while signals are out.

ST. PETERSBURG – Power outages to traffic signals have created dangerous road conditions as more residents return to the city and their homes, St. Petersburg police said.

The city had dozens of traffic signals out of service along all of the major north-south roadways as of late Monday (Sept. 11). The St. Petersburg Police Department says there’s no indication when power will be restored to the lights.

Because of the high number of Police Officers required to man the numerous intersections, the St. Petersburg Police Department will resume 12 hour emergency shifts. The St. Petersburg Emergency Operations Center has asked for 200 traffic control officers to help direct traffic in the intersections.

Police recommend that drivers:

*treat flashing traffic signals as 4-way stop signs
*proceed slowly through intersections
*heed the instructions of officers directing traffic
