Pedestrian Dies in Sligh Avenue Crash

He was not within a crosswalk when a dump truck hit him, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Tampa man died Friday (Jan. 5) when he was hit by a dump truck while crossing Sligh Avenue, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

Erick Miguel Lizardi, 20, of Tampa, died at the scene.

The crash happened about 12:50 p.m. on Sligh Avenue just west of U.S. 301.

Deputies said Mr. Lizardi was walking southbound on Sligh when he tried to cross the road just west of U.S. 301 and walked into the path of a 2000 Peterbilt dump truck driven by Benjamin Joseph Richardson, Jr., 46, of Plant City.

Richardson had been driving north on U.S. 301. He was trying to make a left turn onto Sligh under a green arrow when Mr. Lizardi walked in front of the truck from the north shoulder while in the middle of Richardson’s turn.

Deputies said no charges are expected.
