ST. PETERSBURG – A motorcyclist was seriously injured this morning (Aug. 18) in a single-vehicle crash on 49th Street N, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

Robert Douglas Blume, 47, was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with life-threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet. Police said alcohol appears to have played a part in the crash.

The crash happened about 12:57 a.m. on 49th street N at the curve for Sheffield Lake at 23rd Avenue N.

Blume was riding a 2006 Honda VTX1300 motorcycle northbound on 49th when he failed to negotiate the curve and continued straight across a small patch of grass. Upon re-entering the roadway, police said, Blume lost control of his motorcycle, which struck the ground on its right side. The motorcycle slid across 23rd Avenue N and came to rest on a grass field in Sheffield Lake Park.
