FHP troopers said the motorcyclist was traveling at speed and trying to overtake other vehicles.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Thonotosassa man died this morning (March 15) in a crash that closed U.S. 92 for about five hours, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Tommy Lee Hill, 36, of Thonotosassa, died at the scene. Troopers said he was not wearing a helmet. Alcohol was not involved. The other driver was not injured.

The crash happened about 6:14 a.m. on U.S. 92 west of Carmack Road in Hillsborough County.

Troopers said Mr. Hill was driving a 2006 Kawasaki Ninja east on U.S. 92 at a high rate of speed while trying to overtake other eastbound vehicles. As a result, troopers said, the motorcycle collided almost head-on with a 2005 Chevrolet that was headed west on U.S. 92.

The motorcycle overturned after the impact and Mr. Hill was thrown off the bike.

Both lanes of U.S. 92 were closed until about 11:24 a.m.
