Motorcyclist Dead, Passenger Critical After Cortez Boulevard Crash

The motorcyclist ran a red light and turned into the path of an oncoming car, FHP troopers said. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

HERNANDO COUNTY – A motorcyclist is dead and his passenger is in critical condition after a crash on Cortez Boulevard on Saturday (Oct. 13) night, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

William Richard Penning, 65, of Homosassa, and his passenger, Joyce Ann Keller, 64, also from Homosassa, were taken to the Regioinal Medical Center at Bayonet Point where Mr. Penning died. Keller was in critical condition. Neither was wearing a helmet. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

The crash happened about 10:09 p.m. at the intersection of Cortez Boulevard and Cobb Road in Hernando County.

Troopers said Mr. Penning was driving a 2016 motorcycle east on Cortez. He turned left onto Cobb under a red traffic signal and entered the path of a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze driven by Thomas Schilk, 74, of Spring Hill.

The motorcycle driver and his passenger were thrown off the bike during the collision.
