Motor Scooter Driver Dies in St. Pete Crash

Impairment was not a factor in the crash, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

ST. PETERSBURG – The driver of a motor scooter died this morning (Feb. 26) in a traffic crash on 16th Street N, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Willie Bennett Jr., 53, died at the scene.

The crash happened about 6:40 a.m. Police said a 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Steven Buch, 53, was headed north on 16th.  The Chevrolet made a left hand turn from 16th onto 3rd Avenue N and struck the scooter that Mr. Bennett was driving, which was headed south on 16th.

Mr. Bennett was thrown from the scooter. He was not wearing a helmet, police said.

Buch stopped and cooperated with police. Impairment was not a factor, officers said.
