Impairment appears to be a factor in the crash, Pinellas deputies said.

SOUTH PASADENA – A Largo motorcyclist suffered life-threatening injuries Thursday (April 25) in a crash on Gulfport Boulevard S, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

James S. Bekas, 49, suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital. Bekas was not wearing a helmet, deputies said.

The other driver, Sue A. Henderson, 70, of Gulfport, refused treatment at the scene.

The crash happened about 7:15 p.m.at the intersection of Gulfport Boulevard S and Pasadena Avenue S in South Pasadena.

Bekas was driving his 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle north on Pasadena Avenue S approaching a solid green light at the intersection. Deputies said Henderson was driving her 2012 Volvo S80 south on Pasadena Avenue S and was trying to make an eastbound turn on Gulfport with a flashing yellow arrow.

As Henderson made the eastbound turn, deputies said she entered the path of Bekas’ motorcycle. Bekas’ motorcycle struck the passenger side of Henderson’s car.

Impairment does appear to be a factor in the crash, deputies said. The investigation continues.
