Driver Dies, 6 Children Injured in I-75 Crash

Neither the driver nor four of the children were wearing seat belts or were in child safety seats.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A driver died and six children were taken to the hospital after a tire blew out on an SUV on I-75 this morning (Oct. 15).

Jessica Guevara, 28, of Brandon, died at the scene.

Ulitza Trujillo, 9, of Wimauma, and Daviyon Regino, 1, of Brandon, were taken to Tampa General Hospital with critical injuries.

Kiyana McBride, 7, of Brandon; Yeneli Trujillo, 10, and Lila Trujillo, 11, both of Wimauma; and Daliza Regino, 2, of Brandon, were taken to Tampa General with minor injuries. Hillsborough Fire Rescue said two of the children were flown to Tampa General. The others were taken by ambulance.

Ms. Guevara was not wearing a seat belt, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Kiyana, Lila, Ulitza, and Daliza were not wearing seat belts or in child safety seats. All were thrown out of the SUV when it overturned.

The crash happened about 8 a.m. on southbound I-75 just south of Big Bend Road in Hillsborough County. Troopers said Ms. Guevara was driving a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee south on I-75 when the left rear tire blew out and she lost control of the SUV.

The SUV left the road, overturned and collided with the tree line. As the SUV overturned, Ms. Guevara and four of the children were thrown from the vehicle.

All lanes of I-75 were shut down to allow the helicopters to land. Southbound traffic was diverted to Exit 246. One southbound lane was reopened about 10:53 a.m.and all were reopened as of noon, according to the FHP.
