HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – Two men died Saturday (Dec. 17) in a head-on collision, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Juventino Vasquez, 47, of Wimauma, died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt. The name of the other driver, who also died at the scene, is being withheld pending notification to his next of kin. It is unclear if he was wearing a seat belt. Felix Valdes, 63, of Wimauma, a passenger in Mr. Vasquez’s pickup truck, was taken to Tampa General Hospital with serious injuries.

It is also unclear if alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash.

The crash happened about 8:35 p.m. on State Road 674 east of County Road 579. Troopers said a Chevrolet van driven by the unidentified man was westbound on 674. It crossed over into the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a 1996 Dodge pickup driven by Mr. Vasquez. The van came to rest in the center of the lanes and caught fire. The pickup came to rest on the shoulder of the road.
