Lack of lighting in the area contributed to the crash, according to the Hillsborough County sheriff.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A 13-year-old riding a tricycle died Saturday (Aug. 12) night when hit by a car, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

Messiah Hector, 13, of Ruskin, died at the scene. Messiah was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The crash happened about 8:40 p.m. on 21st Street SE north of Third Avenue SE. Deputies said Messiah Hector was riding a big wheel tricycle on 21st when hit by Keith Silva, who was driving a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am on 21st.

Silva was unable to see Messiah Hector in the roadway because of lack of lighting in the area of the crash. As a result, the Pontiac struck the trike, deputies said.
