He overtook and collided with a car that was ahead of him, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Clearwater man died early Sunday (Jan. 14) in a traffic crash on Hillsborough Avenue, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Matthew Cain, 43, of Clearwater, died at the scene. The other driver, Dasha Frary, 18, of Tarpon Springs, was not injured.

The crash happened about 12:11 a.m. on Hillsborough Avenue east of Countryway Boulevard. Troopers said Mr. Cain was driving a 2016 Ford Focus east on Hillsborough in the center lane. He overtook and collided with the rear of a 2005 Mercedes M Class sedan driven by Frary that was ahead of him.

After the collision, the Ford left the road and hit a concrete utility pole.
