The officer had stopped to help a motorist when the crash happened.

ST. PETERSBURG – A driver crashed into a St. Pete police cruiser and a disabled car early today (Aug. 20).

Details are sketchy while the Florida Highway Patrol investigates the crash.

St. Petersburg police say the crash happened about 2:30 a.m. when an officer stopped on I-275 near Tampa to help a motorist who had broken down on the road in the northbound lanes. A third vehicle crashed into the cruiser and the disabled car. No one was hurt, but the two other cars, not the cruiser, caught on fire.
