Brandon Man Dies in Single-Car Crash

He was not wearing a seat belt, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Brandon man died early Friday (May 11) morning in a single-car crash, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Gustavo Martinez-Meza, 37, of Brandon, died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt.

The crash happened about 3:42 a.m. on westbound State Road 574 east of Sydney Dover Road. Troopers said Mr. Martinez-Meza was driving a 1996 Toyota Avalon west on SR 574 when, for an unknown reason, the car left the roadway.

The Toyota drove onto the shoulder and hit a guardrail. It continued until it collided with a utility pole. It is unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
