A woman was seriously injured in the crash, FHP troopers say.

PINELLAS COUNTY – A Clearwater man died of injuries he suffered when his SUV was hit from behind on the Bayside Bridge, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Joseph Ernie Poblete, 45, of Clearwater, died at Northside Hospital where he was taken after the crash.

Laurie Elise Poblete, 34, of Clearwater, a passenger in Mr. Poblete’s SUV, was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg in serious condition.

The other driver was not injured. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

The crash happened about 8:20 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 21) on the southbound Bayside Bridge in Pinellas County.

Troopers said Mr. Poblete was driving a 2003 Toyota SUV ahead of a 2008 Lexus sedan driven by Melissa Kim Calderon, 37, of Clearwater. The Toyota slowed for an unknown reason and the Lexus hit it from behind. The Toyota spun and overturned multiple times.

Charges are pending, troopers said.
