Deborah Figgs-Sanders is running for the District 5 seat on the St. Petersburg City Council.

ST. PETERSBURG – The Suncoast Group of the Sierra Club officially announces its endorsement of Deborah Figgs-Sanders for the District 5 seat on the St. Petersburg City Council.

“We are very pleased to endorse Deborah Figgs-Sanders, a natural leader focused on environmental, social, and economic progress and justice,” said Dan Huber, Sierra Club spokesperson. “Figgs-Sanders understands that proactive policies which support the sustainability and resiliency of our City are the most effective way to ensure the health of both our environment and our economy.”

Figgs-Sanders has a wealth of management and leadership experience with non-profit, private business, and civic organizations, Huber said. She is a small business owner and recently served seven years as executive director of the Childs Park YMCA, in which position she emphasized the importance of environmental education.

Among Figgs-Sanders’ priorities are improving the sustainability and resiliency of St. Petersburg by promoting renewable energy, continuing to invest in the city’s water infrastructure, and expanding mass transit. Figgs-Sanders has said she will also tackle the issue of workforce housing affordability, improve the quality of youth programs and services, and facilitate small business development, which is the backbone of the local economy. Perhaps most importantly, Figgs-Sanders says, she wants to ensure that the benefits of these policies are enjoyed by all members of our community.

Figgs-Sanders has a tremendous record of service and experience across all divisions of our community and economy, and deserves the opportunity to serve St. Petersburg as the next city council representative for District 5, Huber said.

She is seeking the District 5 seat held by Steve Kornell who is terming out. Her opponent is Trenia L. Cox.

All registered voters in St. Petersburg are eligible to vote in the Nov. 5 general election.
