Rene Flowers is running for the District 7 seat on the Pinellas County Commission.

ST. PETERSBURG – Rene Flowers, a current member of the Pinellas County School Board, has picked up the endorsement of the SEIU Florida Public Services Union in her run for the Pinellas County Commission.

“ I cannot express the gratitude that I have for the work that the men and women of SEIU Florida Public Service Union Members provide to the community,” Flowers said. “The sanitation, maintenance, storm water sewer, healthcare staff, and bus drivers have become the vision of front line workers during the COVID-19   pandemic.”

The union represents more than 19,000 workers in eight counties, 16 cities, three Head Start Agencies, four school districts across Florida, and several health care facilities. Locally, the SEIU Florida Public Service Union represents most of the larger government employees, including the city of St. Petersburg, Pinellas County Schools, Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority, and the University of South Florida.

Flowers noted, whom we depend on for our safety, health, education, child care, and other vital services are to be commended,” Flowers said. “Our communities are healthy and well served because of your ser- vice.”

The seven-member Pinellas County Commission governs all unincorporated areas of the county directly; municipalities may call upon the County for specialized services. Commissioners adopt local rules, pass budgets, set property tax rates, hire a county manager and county attorney.

The District 7 seat is currently held by Democrat Ken Welch who is not seeking reelection. The representative for District 7 is elected by voters who live in that district. The district generally covers southern St. Petersburg, Gulfport, South Pasadena, Kenneth City and the unincorporated Lealman area.

Other candidates who have qualified to run for the District 7 seat are Flowers’ fellow Democrats Wengay “Newt” Newton and Frank Peterman, Jr. Maria L. Scruggs, who has no party affiliation, has also qualified to run.
