Tom Keller is running for Seat 4 on the Clearwater City Council.

CLEARWATER – Tom Keller, a candidate for Seat 4 on the Clearwater City Council, said he pledges to serve citizens in a candid fashion.

“I’ve been a Clearwater resident for 30 years, but I’ve never sought public office before,” Keller said. “I think the time has come to bring a new face and fresh ideas to the table.”

Keller said he wants to put an end to wasteful spending, such as $45,300 the city might lose simply by not returning 302 GPS units to a vendor on time. Other projects would involve reducing utility costs. This, he said, is particularly important after the city increased bills while reducing garbage collection from twice a week to once a week.

“I will run an ethical campaign because that’s how I will approach my job as a councilmember,” Keller said. “We deserve people on the council who will represent all residents with honesty and integrity in every portion of our beautiful city.”

he Clearwater City Council is comprised of the mayor and four council members, who each serve four-year terms. The council is the legislative and policymaking body of the city, responsible for approving the budget and determining the ad valorem tax rate on all real and personal property within the corporate limits of the city.

In addition, the council members evaluate the job performance of the city manager and the city attorney, attend city council meetings, special workshops/meetings, schedule and attend community meetings to address various topics and initiatives, serve as the city liaison for various areawide boards, and represent the city at ribbon cuttings, opening day festivities, and organizational welcomes and events.

Council members are paid about $21,892 a year. They are elected at large in a nonpartisan election.

Keller is facing David Allbritton in the race for Seat 4. Allbritton ran unsuccessfully for the seat in 2014 against Bill Jonson. Jonson is terming out of office.

The election is March 13.
