Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum is running for governor of Florida.
TAMPA – Hillsborough County State Attorney Andrew Warren has endorsed Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum in the race for Florida governor.
“Mayor Gillum has a record of making Tallahassee safer,” Warren said. “As mayor, Andrew Gillum invested in law enforcement and embraced criminal justice reform. His work helped achieve a double-digit drop in crime. Mayor Gillum has the vision, leadership, and integrity to be our Governor. For a safer and stronger Florida, I stand with Mayor Gillum.”
Gillum said he was thrilled to have Warren’s endorsement.
“I’m thrilled and honored to have the support of State Attorney Andrew Warren in this race for Governor. He understands the critical link between smart justice and public safety, and he’s one of our leaders in strengthening and healing communities,” Gillum said. “I look forward to campaigning with him in Tampa and across Florida.”
Warren’s endorsement came on the same day (Sept. 12) that the Gillum campaign released figures showing crime had dropped in Tallahasee during Gillum’s term of office. According to records from the Tallahassee Police Department, overall crime is down a little more than 10 percent for the first six months of this year. Violent crime dropped more than 24 percent from January through June compared with the first six months of 2017, according to city documents. Property crimes dropped nearly 8 percent.
It’s a trend, the campaign said, that began in 2017. According to Tallahassee City Commission materials, crime dropped 14 percent in 2017, with the crime rate reaching a five-year low.
Gillum, a Democrat, is facing Republican Ron DeSantis in the Nov. 6 general election. The last day to register to vote in the general election is Oct. 9. You can register to vote in person or online.
