Florida Planned Parenthood Endorses Garcia for State House

Tammy Garcia | Florida House | Politics

Tammy Garcia is running for the District 37 seat in the Florida House of Representatives.

PASCO COUNTY – The Florida Planned Parenthood political action committee has endorsed Tammy Garcia in the race for Florida House of Representatives District 37.

“We are thrilled to announce that you have received the endorsement of the Florida Planned Parenthood PAC,” FLPPPAC wrote to Garcia. “You have been a strong supporter of reproductive health and we know you will continue to be a dedicated advocate.”

FLPPPAC is the political arm of Planned Parenthood organizations in Florida and is a separate and segregated political action committee, which supports state candidates who are pro-family planning and support access to safe and legal abortion.

Garcia said, “We are at a critical time when women’s rights are under attack and we need legislators in Tallahassee that will defend them. I will fight to protect women’s rights including the right to affordable and accessible health care.”

Garcia added, “I am one in five. Before the Affordable Care Act, I was denied health insurance because I had migraines. I needed Planned Parenthood for preventive care. They were there for me when I needed basic healthcare and I will be fighting to make sure that they will continue to be there for women that need their services.”

Garcia was born and raised in Tampa. She has been married for 11 years and has a 2-year-old son. She works from home doing medical insurance billing for an optometry office and has been in the eye care field since 2004. This is her first venture into politics.

Garcia said she decided to run for a state level position in 2016 when North Carolina passed what has been dubbed the “bathroom bill.”  This bill determined what restroom the transgender community could use while also placing severe restrictions on what laws a city can make. It eliminated cities’ being able to determine their own minimum wage and make anti-discrimination laws, among other things. The bill demonstrated that the legislators were making bills with no understand, care, or concern for the people that they were supposed to be representing, Garcia said.

If elected, Garcia said she wants to bring common sense and a care for the people being served to Tallahassee.

“I think that the issues we are facing are bigger than party affiliation,” Garcia has said. “When we reach across the aisle, we can accomplish more. It’s you, the citizens of Pasco and of Florida that we need to put first and fight for.”

She is running for HD 37, which is currently held by Republican Richard Corcoran. HD 37 covers a portion of Pasco County that includes Odessa, Land O’ Lakes, River Ridge, Quail Ridge, Shady Oaks and Heritage Pines.

She is the only Democrat running for the seat. Three Republicans are also running for the seat. The winner of the Republican primary on Aug. 28 will face off against Garcia in the Nov. 6 general election.
