Qualifying opens Tuesday (Aug. 1). The election is Nov. 7.

SEMINOLE – Roger Edelman and Bob Matthews are running for reelection to the Seminole City Council.

“I’ve got all the paperwork done,” Matthews said. “My platform is going to be the usual.”

That’s spend wisely and do the right thing, he said.

Edelman said the city is doing well at the moment but could have some challenges in the next few years. Among them are the fiscal impact of a proposed expansion in the homestead exemption. That could cost the city about $500,000 a year in property taxes, he said. The proposal is scheduled to be on the November 2018 ballot.

That’s not the only potential challenge facing Seminole. The Penny for Pinellas sales tax is up for renewal this November. The city could be hurt if voters don’t approve the 10-year extension of the tax.

Edelman has served on the Seminole council since 2014. He is president of the Seminole Chamber of Commerce, a position he has held since 2011.

Matthews has served on the Seminole council since 1990 with the exception of eight months in 2006-07. He and his wife, Pat, own Seminole Garden Florist.

Seminole has a council-manager form of government in which a mayor and six council members pass a budget and set policy. The daily activities of the city are run by a city manager.

Council members serve three-year terms and are paid $8,200 a year. They meet at least twice a month.

Qualifying opens at 9 a.m. Tuesday (Aug. 1) and closes at 4 p.m. Aug. 14. Candidates run at large and the two top votegetters will take office. The election is Nov. 7.
