Bicyclist Dies in Hillsborough Crash

The car that hit the bicyclist kept going and was stopped in Pinellas County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A bicyclist was killed Wednesday (June 29) evening when he was hit while riding on the shoulder of I-275, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

John M. Brennan, 44, of Sayreville, NJ, died at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet, troopers said.

William B. Matthews, 67, of Bay Harbor Island, was charged with DUI manslaughter and leaving the scene of a crash involving death, troopers said.

The crash happened about 7:16 p.m. when a 2016 Toyota Camry driven by Matthews veered off his lane of travel and onto the shoulder of the road and collided with Mr. Brennan. Troopers said Matthews did not stop but continued driving south into Pinellas County where he turned west on Ulmerton Road where he was stopped by FHP troopers.
