The man’s car burst into flames when it was hit.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A man died late Monday (Jan. 25) when the van he was driving burst into flames after being rear-ended, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The dead man’s identity is being withheld pending notification to relatives, the FHP said.

FHP troopers said the man , who was driving a 1987 Chevrolet van, was stopped with no lights in the center lane of southbound I-275 at milepost 56 about 11:42 p.m. Monday. A 2015 semi/tractor-trailer driven by Harry F. Hobbs, 49, of Cleveland, TN, hit the van from the rear. The van immediately burst into flames, troopers said. The van driver died at the scene. Hobbs was uninjured.

Troopers said it is unclear why the van was stopped. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor and no charges have been filed.
