St Pete Police Catch Suspected Bank Robber

Officers picked up the man about five minutes after a credit union was robbed.

ST. PETERSBURG – Police here say they caught a man suspected of robbing a credit union – about five minutes after the robbery took place.

The St. Petersburg Police Department responded to a bank robbery at Grow Financial, 2600 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. N about 9:30 this morning. The suspect approached the teller and implied he had a weapon, then left the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash.

About 9:35a.m., officers in the area said they spotted a man matching the suspect’s description walking along 14th Street N and stopped him. They said he was identified as the bank robber and taken into custody without incident. Officers recovered a large amount of cash while searching him.

The accused bank robber was identified as Johnny Leo Haugabook Jr., 49, who is currently serving federal probation. Because of the probation, police said the investigation was been turned over to federal authorities.
