Police Dog Nabs Motorcycle Thief, Hernando Deputies Say

The suspect was treated for a dog bite before he was taken to jail, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

SPRING HILL – A homeless man was caught by a sheriff’s K-9 officer and charged with the theft of a motorcycle, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said.

Jerry Wade Hamby, 35, was charged with grand theft auto, resisting arrest without violence, and violation of a felony probation. Hamby was taken to a hospital to be treated for a dog bite before he was taken to the Hernando County Detention Center.

Deputies were investigating the theft of an Enduro style motorcycle that happened in Spring Hill when they saw the bike being operated by Hamby who was also wanted for a probation violation.Deputies said Hamby fled from detectives and abandoned the motorcycle.

A few days later patrol deputies received information regarding a possible location for Hamby in Spring Hill. Deputies, along with a K-9 team of Deputy Jason Jernigan and K-9 Maxx, went there to find Hamby, who fled on foot.

Hamby was eventually found and continued to resist, at which time Jernigan had Maxx help nab Hamby.
