Troy Kinkade | Florida Highway Patrol | Arrests

He tried to flee on foot after the crash, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

SUMTER COUNTY – A Plant City man is facing multiple charges after a fatal traffic crash Tuesday (March 6), the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Kristi Reed, 61 of Homosassa Springs, died in the crash. She was not wearing a seat belt.

The driver and three passengers in the other vehicle suffered minor injuries. The driver, Troy Kinkade, was taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center then to the Sumter County Jail after he was treated. His passengers – Shannon Waldron, 35, of Franklin, Texas; Lucas Dees, 17, of Plant City; and Archie Davis, 33, of Lakeland – were taken to Leesburg Regional Medical Center.

Kinkade, 23, of Plant City, was charged with DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, and driving while license suspended involving a death. Troopers said he was also arrested in connection with a felony warrant for resisting and officer with violence and a misdemeanor warrant for no drivers license that were issued by Hillsborough County.

Troopers said the crash happened about 5:59 a.m. on State Road 44 at I-75 in Sumter County. The FHP said a trooper was in the median of I-75 at the Sumter and Marion County line. The trooper clocked the 2017 Nissan Altima that Kinkade was driving at 92 miles per hour south on I-75.

The trooper tried to overtake the Nissan, which troopers said “abruptly” exited the interstate at SR 44. Troopers said the Nissan ran a red light at the intersection of the exit ramp and SR 44 and collided with the 2006 Toyota Camry that Ms. Reed was driving east on SR 44. The Toyota had a green light, troopers said. Both vehicles left the road and came to a rest along the south grass shoulder.

After the crash, troopers said Kinkade got out of the Nissan and tried to run away. After a foot chase, a trooper caught him.
