Pedestrian Injured, Driver Charged in St. Pete Crash

The pedestrian was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries, St. Petersburg police say.

ST. PETERSBURG – A Tallahassee man was arrested after he struck a pedestrian Saturday (Dec. 17), according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Thomas Kenneth Vaughan, 55, was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg. He is listed in serious condition.

Joseph Kenneth Deegan, 45, of 5363 Tallapoosa Road in Tallahassee, was charged with one count of driving under the influence/causing serious bodily injury, police said.

The crash happened about 6:12 p.m. on Fifth Avenue and 29th Street N. Police said a 2003 Lincoln Aviator driven by Deegan was eastbound in the 3000 block of 5th Avenue N approaching 29th Street. A pedestrian was crossing 5th Avenue and, for an unknown reason, police said, Deegan did not see the pedestrian in the roadway and struck him. Deegan was evaluated and found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage, officers said.
