CLEARWATER – A local lawyer tried to bring a loaded handgun into the Pinellas County Justice Center, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

James Franklin Lowy, 49, of 16216 First St. E, Redington Beach, is charged with one count of carrying a concealed firearm, a felony, according to Pinellas County Jail records.

Deputies said Lowy entered the main public entrance of the Justice Center, 14250 49th St. N, about 9 a.m. Thursday (Sept. 15). He went to the security screening area near the entrance of the
courthouse and placed his belongings onto a tray to be checked by the x-ray machine. While monitoring the x-ray machine, deputies said they saw the outline of a handgun and a magazine containing ammunition in Lowy’s backpack.

Deputies said they looked inside the backpack and found a loaded Ruger .45 caliber handgun containing a fully loaded magazine with one bullet in the chamber. A second fully loaded magazine was found inside the same backpack. Deputies said Lowy admitted the handgun was his. According to Lowy, he was scheduled to attend a disbarment hearing at the courthouse. Lowy did not possess a concealed weapon permit, deputies said.
