Driver Charged with DUI Manslaughter in Hit-and-Run Death of Bicyclist

He turned himself in, Hillsborough deputies said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Riverview man is accused of drunken driving in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a bicyclist in September, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

Richard George Sheldon Jr., 44, of Riverview was charged with one count each of leaving the scene of a crash with death, DUI manslaughter leaving the scene, DUI with property damage or personal injury and DUI in connection with the Sept. 23 death of John Dilgard. Deputies said Sheldon turned himself in Friday (Oct. 5), a day after an arrest warrant was issued.

The arrests arose from a traffic crash that happened about 12:42 a.m. Sept. 23. Mr. Dilgard was riding a yellow Duna mountain bike southbound on Kings Avenue S when he was struck from behind.
