Baby Dies in Hot Mobile Home, Father Arrested

William Francis Hendrickson | Largo Police | Arrests

The baby’s sister was suffering from severe dehydration, according to Largo police.

LARGO – The father of an 8-month-old baby was arrested after the child died in a hot bedroom in  mobile home, the Largo Police Department said.

The baby’s father, William Francis Hendrickson, 26, was charged with aggravated manslaughter in connection with the death of his son. He is also facing a charge of child neglect for the condition of his 2-year-old daughter, who was taken to Johns Hokins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg because she was suffering from severe dehydration, police said.

Largo Police patrol officers went to the baby’s home about 12:30 p.m. Thursday (July 27) to help Pinellas County child protection investigators with a welfare check of two children at the King’s Manor Mobile Home Park, 1399 S Belcher Road. When they got there, officers said they found an 8-month-old boy who was unresponsive because of extreme heat in the trailer.

After calling for Largo Fire Rescue paramedics, Offiver Albin Soto immediately began infant CPR on the child. Soto was relieved by paramedics, who continued resuscitation efforts. The baby was pronounced dead at the scene. Hendrickson had been previously told by social services not to leave the children in the hot environment of the bedroom, officers said. Detectives recorded the temperature in the mobile home’s bedroom at 109 degrees at 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

Police are reminding residents of the dangers of Florida’s high temperatures in confined or poorly ventilated spaces, especially for children, the elderly, and those with special medical concerns. Be aware of the signs of dehydration, heat stress, and heat stroke and take steps to prevent them, officers said.
