Atlanta Man Drowns at Clearwater Beach While Trying to Save Son, Niece

After plunging into the water to rescue his family members, he began having trouble himself.

CLEARWATER BEACH – An Atlanta man drowned Monday (July 6) when he tried to save family members who were struggling in the water.

Thanh Nguyen, 55, of Atlanta, was declared dead at Morton Plant Hospital where he was taken after being pulled from the water.

Clearwater Fire Rescue and the Clearwater Police Department were called to Clearwater Beach about 2:33 p.m. for a drowning call.

Mr. Nguyen had noticed his son and niece having trouble in the water near Tower 3, so he went in to the water to try to help them. That’s when he began having trouble himself.

Lifeguards were notified and they found Mr. Nguyen floating in the water. They began CPR until fire medics from Clearwater fire arrived.
