Castor: ‘We Owe It to the Military’ to Pass War Powers Resolution

Kathy Castor | U.S. Rep. | Politics

The U.S. House passed a resolution Thursday (Jan. 9) to limit Donald Trump’s ability to strike Iran without Congressional approval.

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Tampa, released this statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed a War Powers Resolution to limit the Trump Administration’s military actions against Iran:

“The War Powers Resolution is intended to make clear that if the president wants to take America to war, he must obtain an authorization from the people’s representatives in Congress – as the Constitution requires. The president cannot do it alone. In fact, the Constitution vests in Congress the power to declare war. We owe it to the military to provide clarity and to abide by the Constitution that they have sworn their lives to protect.

“While Iran’s Gen. [Qassem] Soleimani courted his fate with his decades of malign and violent activity, and I do not mourn his death, his killing was a provocative act that puts America at risk. This resolution should move President [Donald] Trump to develop a coherent strategy in concert with the Congress to keep the American people safe and ensure stability in the region.”

Castor represents Florida’s 14th Congressional District, which includes Tampa and part of Hillsborough County.
