The protest is one of hundreds planned across the country to speak out against laws that seek to overturn a woman’s right to an abortion.

ST. PETERSBURG – Four local groups are planning a protest Tuesday (May 21) in St. Petersburg to fight against laws to urge continued access to safe, legal abortion.

The St. Petersburg protest is one of hundreds planned across the country in the wake of laws that have been passed that seek to overturn Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that guarantees a woman’s right to a safe, legal abortion.

According to the national group’s website, stopabortionbans.org, “Across the country, we are seeing a new wave of extreme bans on abortion, stripping away reproductive freedom and representing an all-out assault on abortion access. This is [President Donald] Trump’s anti-choice movement… and it’s terrifying, particularly for women of color and low-income women who are most affected by these bans.

“We will show up to speak out and fight back against this unconstitutional attempt to gut Roe and punish women. Politicians shouldn’t be making decisions best left to women, their families, and their doctors.

“Together we say: Stop the bans.”

The St. Petersburg event is sponsored by Progress Florida, Fired Up Pinellas, League of Women Voters of the St. Petersburg Area, and Pinellas County NOW Social Media Outreach. It is scheduled for noon to 1 p.m. at the St. Petersburg Judicial Building, 545 First Ave. N, St Petersburg. For informaation, or to sign up, go to facebook.com.
