The incident in Riverview began with a domestic violence call. A man has been charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, Hillsborough deputies said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A man has been accused of trying to murder two deputies after an early morning shootout Sunday (June 26) with two deputies, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Jamil Alejandro Valladares, 26, of 9525 Grovedale Circle, Riverview, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. Further charges are pending, deputies said. The two deputies, who were not injured, are on paid leave.

The incident began about 1:17 Sunday (June 26) 1:17 am, when Kisra Kariema Wong, 24, called for help, saying Valladares, who was her boyfriend, had pulled her hair and ripped her robe during a domestic violence incident. She told dispatchers that he probably was in possession of a handgun. Deputis Austin O’Neill and Joshua Berrios arrived and began interviewing Wong in her apartment.

Wong’s mother came to help her daughter, and while getting a bag from her vehicle. saw Valladares at the front of the building. She came inside and told deputies Valladares was outside. The deputies went out and saw Valladares in front of his vehicle, a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer. Deputies said they approached Valladares, who began backing up and becoming verbally aggressive.

Deputies said they saw Valladares put his right hand into his shorts pocket, pull out a handgun and raise it. They said they feared for their lives and immediately drew their weapons and fired at Valladares. Valladares was struck numerous times,and his vehicle sustained a broken rear window, numerous bullet holes and a flat tire.

The firearm used by Valladares was recovered next to him, and was a Smith & Wesson, SW40VE .40 caliber. Two spent .40 caliber shell casings were located near the handgun, deputies said.

Valladares was taken to the hospital where he was charged and booked. He will be transferred to the Hillsborough County Jail when he is medically cleared.

The two deputies have been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. O’Neill, 26, has been with the Hillsborough sheriff for two years. Berrios, 29, has been with the department for six months. Both are assigned to patrol.
