Tampa Police Say Body May Be That of Missing Swimmer

The body is believed to be Robert A Lucas, who was last seen Saturday (July 1) afternoon swimming in the bay at Cypress Point Park.

TAMPA – Police here say they have found a body in the bay off the beach at Cypress Point Park.

Tampa police said they believe the body is that of Robert A Lucas, who was last seen Saturday (July 1) afternoon swimming in the bay at Cypress Point Park, 5620 Cypress Drive.

Mr. Lucas was reported missing about 2:50 p.m.by family members Saturday afternoon. He was last seen swimming in the bay off Cypress Point Park. Divers and marine units from the Tampa Police Department, the US Coast Guard, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission searched for Mr. Lucas Saturday afternoon and into the night. The search resumed this morning (July 2).

About 9:40 a.m., the TPD marine patrol spotted a body in about 10 feet of water, roughly 50 feet from where Lucas was last seen. The body has been recovered and Mr. Lucas’ family members have been notified.

At this time, Tampa police are working with the medical examiner to definitivelydetermine the identity and cause of death, although it appears that the body is Mr. Lucas and that he drowned.
