TAMPA – Police here are investigating a shooting that left a toddler injured.

Aaliyah Avila, 21 months, was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to her thigh, Tampa police said. She is expected to recover.

The shooting happened about 12:25 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 16) at 404 N Hernandez Court. Police said it appears that the child’s father, Eduardo Avila, was the intended target of the gunfire. While outside the apartment, he was approached by some men who made threatening comments and/or gestures. P

olice said Avila went into his apartment and, shortly after he closed the door, an estimated 15 shots were fired at the front door and in the area in front of the house. It appears that one of the bullets went through the front door, ricocheted off a wall, and struck Aaliyah. At the time of the shooting, there were four people in the apartment, including the father, mother, daughter and another child. None of the others were injured, officers said.
