Tampa Police Pull Unconscious Child from River

A woman is suspected of throwing the child, who died, into the river, the Tampa Police Department said.

TAMPA – A child who was pulled unconscious from the Hillsborough River has died, according to the Tampa Police Department.

The child’s name was not released.

Police said that, about 4 p.m. today (Aug. 2), they received a report that a woman had thrown a child into the Hillsborough River near N Rome Avenue.

The TPD dive team went to the scene at N Rome Avenue and W Aileen Street. At about 4:30 p.m., a dive team member discovered an unconscious child submerged about 75 feet offshore. The child was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police said they have found the woman suspected of tossing the child in the water. She was walking not far from the scene. The child is believed to be the woman’s 4-year-old daughter.

The woman was in custody early this evening, but had provided little information.
